Victory Gardens

Victory gardens are a manageable space that can supplement a family’s diet while reducing waste and providing quality food that is as local as a backyard, a balcony, or even a windowsill. The need for fresh produce in the Stockton, CA area is significant, and the desire for home gardens and community gardens has increased since the COVID-19 pandemic.

What are Victory Gardens?

Victory gardens are a manageable space that can supplement a family’s diet while reducing waste and providing quality food that is as local as a backyard, a balcony, or even a windowsill. The need for fresh produce in the Stockton, CA area is significant, and the desire for home gardens and community gardens has increased since the COVID-19 pandemic.

PUENTES builds victory gardens throughout the Stockton community and provide tutorials that allow for people to take control of their own food system by providing basic materials and skills that can be adapted to any space. Focusing on wholesome foods for improved health, PUENTES aims to increase local knowledge in food production, preparation, and create a community of engagement for better mental and physical health.

Victory Garden Project Status & History

In 2020, because of a grant from Stockton Strong, PUENTES built 10 victory gardens across the Stockton community.

In 2022, PUENTES was awarded a grant by the Sozosei Foundation to build 15 victory gardens throughout the Stockton community. Over 25 families were impacted as PUENTES reached the goal of building these 15 gardens. Additionally, PUENTES assisted in garden repairs, compost distribution, and general guidance for another 10 residents.

These gardens provide a low cost/low risk space for people to be introduced to small scale farming and healthier lifestyles. PUENTES increased outreach and education to benefit all members of the community.
